LIGHTING DESIGNER DRAFTSPERSON
ABOUT SOPHIE:
I am a lighting designer, interactive experience designer, and early childhood educator. I use my background in fine arts to create immersive sensory experiences for children. These are designed as art pieces intended to educate children as they play within the installation.
I was born and raised in Wellington, New Zealand, and moved to Oregon at the age of 13. At high school in Oregon, I joined the lighting crew at Summit Theatre Company. I quickly fell in love with lighting, and have trained my eyes and brain to really understand light. I worked in many theatres with many different companies in high school, including Cascade Theatre Company, Thoroughly Modern Productions, and BEAT Children’s Theatre.
I moved to Savannah, GA to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design with a major in Production Design, a concentration in Lighting Design, and a minor in Film and Television. At SCAD I collaborate with many different artists and filmmakers, we have the opportunity to utilize film equipment such as lights, cameras, and more. It is with this access to equipment that has allowed me to continue learning different ways to control light and create interesting art.
I started working in early childhood education in 2023. I love how childrens minds work, their creativity and imagination inspires me to be a more experimental artist. I want to create art that blends my love of light with my love of educating and inspiring children.
